Arts in the Valley Concert Weekend presents Beethoven's Letters with John Bell & The Tinalley String Quartet at Kangaroo Valley Village Hall 6th & 7th June

“...engrossing and entertaining evening” Limelight Magazine

On the June long weekend Bell Shakespeare director John Bell will return to Kangaroo Valley to perform Beethoven’s Letters with the Tinalley String Quartet. The Saturday evening performance on June 6th blends the sounds of the string quartet with the rich storytelling talents of Bell, Beethoven’s Letters is a musical insight into the complex disposition of one of the most influential composers of all time, Ludwig Van Beethoven. The program in addition to Beethoven’s musical narrative a concept devised by Anna Melville which is titled Beethoven’s Letters also features Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Opus 13 in A minor. The Sunday daytime performance offers a further Tinalley String Quartet concert of Beethoven, Dvorak and Mendelssohn.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the performance takes us through some of the most enduring chamber music ever written, while actor John Bell weaves a narrative from eighteen of Beethoven’s letters, culminating with the devastating Heiligenstadt Testament. Voted Australia’s favourite composer in the ABC’s Classic 100 survey by nearly 130,000 people, Beethoven remains classical music’s most iconic revolutionary. Beneath the rigour of his string quartets lies a humanism embodying the ideals of fraternity, enlightenment and democracy. While this music is often an affirmation of resilience, his letters reveal an inner life tortured by circumstance.

Described by The Age as 'the hottest ensemble in town’ the Tinalley String Quartet will perform on Sunday June 7th as part of the Arts in the Valley Concert weekend a second concert. They will play Beethoven’s Op18 no4 quartet written by Beethoven in his late twenties, and dedicated to Prince Lobkowitz, the same dedicatee as the later Eroica Symphony No3. This will contrast with Dvorak’s Cypresses II, III & IV, three movements of this twelve movement work for string quartet. Finally we will hear Mendelssohn’s Opus 80 quartet.
